High Speed Printers

Ennov InSight supports the use of a high-speed printer, which can be used to print your final output.

Your printer may require specific configuration and certain printer attributes to accept certain paper weights, sizes, tabs, colors and other print settings.

For a complete list of the printers supported by Ennov InSight , as well as information on PostScript support, see the Ennov InSight System Support Documentation (SSD).

Print Commands

You can use a high speed printer to print your assembly.

Ennov InSight creates the data in the .prn file in a format specific for your printer. Your high-speed printer is able to read and process the file to print the information as you configured it in Ennov InSight .

You may send the generated .prn files to the printer using the Command Prompt window to type command lines. The commands instruct your machine which files to send to a specified printer.

Note: The following instructions may be used to send .prn files from the File system only.

To open the Command Prompt window on your computer:

  1. Click Start.
  2. In the Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog, type cmd and then click OK.
  4. At the prompt, use one of the following print commands:

— Lpr

— Copy

— ftp

Print Command Types

You can send print jobs from Ennov InSight with the help of different commands.

There are three types of commands that you can use to send print jobs from Ennov InSight to the printer:

— lpr - Copy a volume .prn file to a network printer that uses a line printer dæmon.

— copy - Copy a volume .prn file to a Windows Printer Port which has been set up using the Windows printer driver, on shared Windows printers.

— ftp - Use an ftp (file transfer protocol) service to transfer .prn files to a printer.

lpr command

Use the lpr (line printer requester) command to copy a volume .prn file to a network printer, which is running a line printer dæmon ( lpd) process.

In the following examples, the -o l argument (lowercase O, space, lowercase L) designates a binary file. Use this argument to send all Ennov InSight output to any network printer.

This is the format for the lpr command line: lpr -o l -S <printer name or IP Address> -P print <Printable output file name>

lpr -o l -S 10.224.140.8 -P print C:\MyOutout\v0000001.prnlpr -o l -S Ecopy2.us.liquent.com -P print v0000001.prn

copy command

Use the copy command to copy a volume .prn file to a shared Windows printer port that has been set up using the Windows printer driver for the target printer.

This is the format for the copy command line: copy /B < Printable output file name> <Windows

Printer Port>

copy /B C:\MyOutout\v0000001.prn \\LIQUENTPRINT\Ecopy2

Note: The /B argument designates binary file. This argument should be used for sending all Ennov InSight output to any network printer.

ftp command

Use ftp (File Transfer Protocol) to exchange files over your network between your computer and your printer. You can use ftp with the Windows Command Prompt or with an ftp client program that offers a graphical user interface to transfer files from Ennov InSight to an ftp-capable printer.

To use ftp to transfer files to the printer, an ftp service must be running on the printer controller. Before transferring files using put, mput or send, set the transfer type to binary by sending the binary command.

For additional information about high-speed printing, refer to the instruction manual for your printer.

Canon imageRUNNER Printers

Ennov InSight is compatible with Canon ImageRUNNER printers for paper output. These printers must be used with a Canon ImagePASS printer controller. Ennov InSight does not support the standard imageRUNNER printer controller.

The paper output from these printers is limited to white and one other paper color supported for slip sheets and color cover pages. Because Ennov InSight selects paper by media attributes (size, weight, media type, and color) your Canon ImageRUNNER printer must be configured for the paper stocks you use in it. This setup is done on the printer operator panel and touch screen.

— Only white and color paper color are supported. The imageRUNNER cannot be configured to distinguish paper by color.

— Drilled (pre-punched) color and tab papers are not supported.

Tabs are inserted in the volume PDF and PostScript output file as normal letter or A4 pages. Special ImagePASS commands select the correct media and shift the page image to the correct position. Tab pages will appear as normal letter or A4 when the PostScript output file is distilled to PDF.

— Extra pages for any unused tabs in the last set of tabs are added to the printable output.

— All supported imageRUNNER printers have an unprintable area 13 points (13/72 in. or approx. 4.5mm) wide around the page. This includes Tab pages. Tab text is set inside the printable area of the page in the Volume PDF. Any PDF content which falls outside of the printable area of the physical page will be clipped by the printer

The following paper types are supported for imageRUNNER printers:

— A4

— Color A4

— Drilled A4

— Letter

— Color Letter

— Drilled Letter

— Plain Flush-Cut A4 5 down Tab

— Plain Gutter-Cut A4 5 down Tab

— Plain Letter 5 down Tab

— Plain A4 10 down Tab

Note: When using Canon imagePASS S-1 or Canon imagePASS M3 printers, Tabs in Volumes that do not begin with a tab page are printed with the text in the original position - the text is not shifted. This is a Canon printer problem and users must contact the Canon corporation for a resolution.

Set up a Canon imageRUNNER Printer

To have a proper output processing fromEnnov InSight , configure Canon ImageRUNNER printer for the paper stocks you use in it.

Ennov InSight selects paper by media type, so the Canon imageRUNNER printer must be configured to recognize which paper stocks are loaded. Use the operator panel and touch screen to setup the Canon imageRUNNER printer to process output from Ennov InSight .

Note: If the touch screen on your printer is blank, the printer is in power save mode. Press the Off/On button on the operator panel.

Kodak Network Imaging System Printers

Ennov InSight Publisher supports NexPress Network Imaging System based printers via a KDK+DSC job ticket prepended to PDF or Postscript page descriptions.

The KDK+DSC job ticket is a Kodak/NexPress proprietary technology supported by the Kodak Network Imaging System controller (also referred to in this documentation as KDKNIS). The Kodak Network Imaging System controller is used by several manufacturers (Canon, IBM, Heidelberg AG) for differently branded products. InSight produces identical Job Tickets for all supported printers.

Because Ennov InSight selects paper by media attributes (size, weight, media type, and color) your printer must be configured for the paper stocks you use in it. You can set up the printer using the Network Imaging System application running the Sun workstation connected to the printer.

1 *gsm = grams per square meter

You must configure the printer before any Ennov InSight output can be processed. The printer controller must be rebooted after you set up the paper catalog so it is recommended that you add all US and/or international paper stock to the paper catalog at the same time.

Implementation Notes

— In the last set of tabs, extra pages for any unused tabs are added to the printable output. The job ticket is created so that these tabs are output from the top output bin of the Printer.

— Drilled Color Media is not supported.

PostScript Printing

The ability to drive all printers in the DocuTechJT, XeroxXPIF, and KDKNIS families via PostScript rather than PDF is available. Using PostScript may solve some PDF problems, such as non-embedded font issues.

In use, the difference is minimal for these printers: a job ticket and output generated as PostScript rather than a job ticket and output generated as PDF. The PostScript output for these printers, like all other printers, is in a file with a PRN extension (.prn = printer-ready output). Rendering creates the data in the .prn file in a format specific to your printer.
