Create a PDS for a Flu Vaccine
The active ingredient (flu strain) for a flu vaccine changes annually, and a new PDS for each flu vaccine must be created.
Your Data Administrator needs to do the following before you can create a PDS for a flu vaccine:
- Create a product family for the flu vaccine, selecting Flu Vaccine as the Product Family Type.
- Create active ingredient values (under Product Family Maintenance) for one or more placeholder flu strains and actual flu strains or reference strains. The placeholder flu strains will be used as a grouping device in the PDS hierarchy, so using generic terms such as Strain 1 and Strain 2 is recommended.
To create a PDS for a flu vaccine:
- Modify the flu vaccine product family created by your Data Administrator by selecting the placeholder flu strains (i.e., Strain 1, Strain 2, etc.) for the active ingredient.
- Create a flu vaccine product associated with flu vaccine product family.
- Create a component for the flu vaccine product, using Flu
Vaccine as the Component Type and by selecting the
placeholder strains as active ingredients.
Option Action To choose a component name: Click a component name that reflects the nature of the component, such as Seasonal Flu Vaccine. To create a component: Select Save and Create a Component from the Product Attributes page, or follow the instructions provided in the topic Creatie a Component. - Create an application and event for the flu vaccine product.
Option Action To associate the flu vaccine product with the application: Select Flu Vaccine as the Product Type for the application and associate the flu vaccine product with the application. - Create a product detail set for the event.Upon creating the PDS, the Product Detail Set Attributes page opens and the PDS hierarchy contains a grouping node for the flu vaccine component.
- Expand the component node.
- Do the following:
Option Action To add an active ingredient: Right-click the Active Ingredients node and select Add Active Ingredient. Select one of the placeholder strains as the active ingredient. To save the changes: Click Save. The selected Strain is listed in the PDS hierarchy tree with a Pending Add status, unless you changed the status while working in the Product Detail Set Attributes page. - Repeat the previous step to add additional flu strain placeholders, if needed.
- Expand the placeholder active ingredient node to view the Flu Strain node beneath it.
- Right-click the Flu Strain node and select Add Flu Strain. The Add Flu Strain page appears.
- Select Flu Strain Name. Only the actual active ingredients for the vaccine are available for selection. Placeholder active ingredients will not be presented for selection.Note: You can only assign one flu strain for each active ingredient placeholder.
- Make additional changes to the Add Flu Strain page, as needed.
- Perform step 9 through step 12, as needed, for additional strains selected in step 7.
- Right-click the Strain created on the step 10 under a Flu Strain, and select Add Reference Strain.
- Select Reference Strain Name. Note: You can assign only one reference strain for each flu strain.Only active Flu Strain Substance values are available for selection.
- Make additional changes to the Add Reference Strain page, as needed.Upon completion, the actual flu strain active ingredient will appear under the Flu Strain node in a Pending Add status, unless you changed the status while working in the Add Flu Strain page. From this point, you will use the same methods used to manage the PDS as you do for other products. The reference flu strain active ingredient will appear under the flu strain active ingredient under the Flu Strain node.
